Great North Western Half Marathon - Blackpool
~ Sunday 26th February 201
Great day with a little wind but no rain and fairly mild. 6 Ladies and 2 Gentlemen from the club got there and on the start line for 11am, with supports on hand – Andrew Beresford, Andy Woodhead and Wendy’s Parents all ready with camera’s to capture the moment!
All successfully completed the race and both Wendy and Nigel both got personal bests in the race and Mavis ran her first Half Marathon so a great result.
Mavis had never run more than ten miles in her life, so I explained to her that as she approaches 67 she has to face new challenges. I'll draw a veil over the comments that I received from her, but I did promise to stay with her all the way. We set off at a sensible, steady pace, and at three miles Mavis spotted a sign "Toilets", a sign that she always has difficulty in running past, and of course she had to take her "comfort break." Following this we kept our steady pace and it was great to wave to our fellow MANHAC runners who had reached the turning point before us. It was also great to see that there were many runners actually behind us, mostly younger and this boosted Mavis's confidence to press on.
We did not walk, but in truth our running pace had fallen to not much more than a fast walking pace. Eventually the 13 mile marker came into sight and we were suddenly being cheered on by all our friends from the Club. It was at this stage that Mavis chose to forget our pact to run together and she broke into a finishing sprint that I could not match.
At the end it was a case of "never again" from Mavis as she declared this to be her first and last Half Marathon.
Now we are sitting with our feet up, watching the T.V. and I have made the tea and I just heard her say, "If I ever do another half".
